After finalizing the story and settings, Takane moved on to selecting the character designer.
The selection process might have been a little unusual.
He kept the illustrations of the candidates open on his computer screen, always visible, and looked at them whenever he had a spare moment.

On days when he felt energetic, on days when he was tired, when he was in high spirits, when he was feeling down, bored, or busy—over the course of several months, he continued to gaze at everyone’s work through many emotions and situations.

The reason he did that was because the characters he would be working with for a long, long time had to be ones that, no matter what mood he was in or what situation he was in, he could look at and still think, “Yeah… I really like this.”

And the character designer he ultimately chose was Suzu Nomiya.
Her illustrations had a unique charm—simple, yet filled with depth.
The more he looked at them, the more layers of meaning and feeling emerged.

When Suzu kindly accepted the job, she brought to life characters like Mao, Onatsu, and the spirit fox Saki—each one a true treasure.
It was the moment when a world that had only existed in words—Operation ONI—was finally given new life through art.

As Takane, overwhelmed with emotion, looks upon these new creations, a new encounter awaits him in next week’s episode.
