Why did Takane choose ink wash painting as the visual concept for Operation ONI?
The answer lies in his experience studying abroad as a teenager.

Life overseas became a journey of rediscovering the beauty of Japan.
As the saying goes, you only realize what you have once it’s gone.
After leaving Japan, he began to notice countless wonderful things about his homeland for the very first time.
And before long, he found himself wanting to bring Japanese culture into the world stage.
Ink wash painting was one of them.

Studio ONI 2-Minute Reel / Feb 2025

We are Studio ONI Ltd., an animation studio based in Tokyo, dedicated to blending Japan’s traditional culture with innovative animation techniques.

In our animation, the backgrounds are hand-painted using traditional sumi-e (ink wash painting), while the characters are drawn with digital sumi-e techniques. This fusion of tradition and modern technology has allowed us to create a one-of-a-kind animation style that is unlike anything else in the world.
